What Child is This?

This traditional carol is sung to the well-known English folktune, 'Greensleeves'.   It is a clever example of a question and answer song - in this case about the Christmas story.

What child is this, who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping:
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds seek and angels sing:
Haste, haste, to bring him praise,
The babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies he in so poor a place,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for God is here,
And for our peace is pleading.
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds seek and angels sing:
Haste, haste, to bring him praise,
The babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come, humbly to revere him;
The King of kings salvation brings -
Let faithful hearts draw near him.
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds seek and angels sing:
Haste, haste, to bring him praise,
The babe, the Son of Mary.
